Abstract: This paper outlines the purpose and rationale of the income maintenance experiments in Seattle and Denver. A review of experimental design and operation is presented, and particular reference is made to methods for minimizing bias arising from the limited experimental nature of the study. The major findings to date on labor supply, schooling and training, and family functioning are summarized. Finally, implications of the labor-supply results for a nationwide negative income tax program are briefly discussed.
