A Survey of Disadvantaged Students' Attitudes towards a Special College Program

Abstract: Thirty-four entering college students, 61 students starting their second semester, 20 students starting their fourth semester, and 14 dropouts were administered a questionnaire surveying their attitudes towards a special college program for the educationally disadvantaged which leads to a baccalaureate degree and in which a preponderance of black and Puerto Rican students were enrolled. Students' attitudes towards particular "special assistance" aspects of the program, as well as changes in these attitudes over time, were analyzed. Students started out extremely accepting and somewhat unrealistic; they became more realistic, reflective, and critical over time. Early identification with the program and feelings of dependence lessened. General satisfaction with the program was found.
