Abstract: The present study discusses market integration from the approach of the agribusiness chain, focuses on commodities and value-added products, and also includes the role of the institutional environment as a boundary limitation for the depth and speed of the process of market integration. The analysis of the data on trade evolution between Argentina and Brazil shows a different pattern if value-added data are analyzed as a distinct category from commodities, indicating important scenarios for corporate planning in the region. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
