Abstract:
The initial lockdown phase of the coronavirus pandemic in the U.S. simultaneously caused food demand from the food service industry to plummet and food insecurity to soar. This created a unique scenario with a large need for food access and a large surplus of food, but no established way to connect the two. The Georgia Department of Agriculture worked with agricultural producers, distributors, and local governments to create a program that facilitated the sale of excess farm commodities and helped alleviate food insecurity. This paper describes how the program was designed and the lessons learned in its execution.
