Contributions to Canadian economic history: The last 30 years

Abstract: The cliometric revolution that transformed economic history in the US in the 1960s was soon embraced by Canadian economic historians. Many of the important issues surrounding Canadian development remained the same: the role of resources, the place of international trade, immigration, capital accumulation and interactions with Native Americans, among others. But beginning in the 1960s, and certainly over the last 30 years, economic historians of Canada have addressed them with the tools of modern economics, both theoretical and empirical. We highlight the recent work emphasizing not just the methods but also the fundamental ways our understanding of Canadian history has been changed. Contributions à l’histoire économique du Canada: les derniers 30 ans. La révolution cliométrique qui a transformé l’histoire économique aux États‐Unis dans les années 1960 a vite séduit les économistes historiens du Canada. Plusieurs des enjeux importants au cœur du développement du Canada sont restés les mêmes : le rôle des ressources naturelles, la place du commerce international, l’immigration, l’accumulation du capital, et les interactions avec les Premières Nations, entre autres, etc. Mais à partir des années 1960, et certainement au cours des derniers 30 ans, les économistes historiens du Canada les ont traités avec les outils de l’économie moderne, à la fois théoriques et empiriques. On souligne des travaux récents qui mettent l’accent non seulement sur les méthodes mais sur les changements fondamentaux dans notre façon de comprendre l’histoire canadienne.
