Abstract: Software engineering methods and especially data modeling techniques are key factors in the design of present-day software packages. Since from the software perspective the most important aspect is the data management, the proper design of data structures both in the application programs and for database systems is essential. In the area of database systems we are still in the transition phase between home-grown packages and commercial products. A first series of general purpose packages have been developed to avoid duplication of work. In view of the forthcoming experiments at future colliders a world-wide agreement on a common data definition language and a common database management system will become an important issue.
