Abstract: We discuss several aspects of the electroweak phase transition, which is generally believed to be first order. Starting from Langer’s theory of metastable states we derive an approximate formula for the decay rate. We then investigate the uncertainties in present evaluations of size and surface tension of critical bubbles and comment on the stumbling blocks on the way towards a quantitative description of the electroweak phase transition.
