Abstract: Polarization decorrelation in single-mode fibers with randomly varying birefringence is studied. We find that polarization decorrelation length is minimized for a given beat length if the autocorrelation length of the internal birefringence fluctuation is close to the average beat length. Implications for both soliton and linear communication systems are discussed
