Abstract: The classical cellular automata model has been modified by introducing "shadow" states or perturbations to represent the application of external signals to a configuration of discrete individual units. Simple update rules are studied to determine which of them are best suited to produce the emergent computation which can simulate signal transmission within a system. The study is made with a view to understanding electrical signalling in plant cells which are known to determine plant responses to the environment.
