Abstract:
This paper examines the employment of persons from three groups of EU countries between March 2011 and March 2013. Describing how employment of persons from EU-8, EU-2 and GIPS countries has developed the labour market impact of current developments such as free movement of workers, EU debt crisis and the related immigration from EU countries is analyzed. It is found that employment of persons from these groups of countries has increased sharply. At the regional level the employment of Germans and of persons from EU-8, EU-2 and GIPS countries has developed similarly. Looking at the employment trends in different economic sectors we find hardly any parallels between Germans and the three groups of foreigners. Immigration of people from the EU-8, EU-2 and GIPS countries seems to contribute mainly to employment in economic sectors that offer less attractive conditions for German employees.
