Abstract: This study examines the effects that the changes of general conditions had on industrial manufacturing in the 1990s on the structure of the manufacturing industry and business strategy. In particular, it identifies causal relationships that allow inferences to be made on the future development of the manufacturing industry and suggestions for economic-policy measures. The methodology is based on the expanded approach to industrial economics provided by the efficient-structure approach. Relevant trends in three important exogenous areas were examined: for Corporate Governance, which stands at the interface between companies and the outside world, for financial markets and for information and communication technology. Expanding on the available literature and empirical studies, the study uses its own surveys to identify important causal relationships. Supplemental expert interviews were conducted in the motor vehicle industry and in mechanical engineering.
