Global legal education in Scotland: reflections from the global law LLB at Edinburgh Law School

Abstract: This chapter reflects on the development and delivery of global legal education (GLE) at Edinburgh Law School (ELS), and in particular its new Global Law LLB. Welcoming its first cohort of 36 undergraduates in 2024, the Global Law LLB is taught as a distinctive LLB, alongside the Scots Law LLB that has long been the staple of ELS's undergraduate offering. The Global Law degree is the School's first departure from Scots law undergraduate degrees—and indeed, it is not jurisdictionally based at all, in the sense that it does not provide a qualification to practice in any particular jurisdiction. In this chapter, we leverage the story of GLE at ELS in ways that we think draw out a specific set of constitutive tensions in global law programmes more generally: (1) jurisdiction and grounding global legal education in “place”; (2) interdisciplinarity and its relationship to (“legal”) reason and reasoning; and (3) professional ethics in a global context. We discuss some of the programmatic and pedagogical responses at Edinburgh, as well as the particularities of the context which mould those responses.
