News media viability
C. Ann Hollifield
Chapter 8 in A Research Agenda for Media Economics, 2019, pp 121-143 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
News media viability has become one of the central issues in media economics and management. As news organizations around the world fail or turn to journalistically unethical practices to survive, the importance of news content to government, the economy and human rights become increasingly apparent. As a result, funders are moving quickly to support research on news media viability. News media “viability†extends the concept of “sustainability†to include the quality of the news content produced by news organizations, requiring content quality to be as important a dependent variable as financial performance. Traditional media economics research that understands news media organizations only as businesses fails to address the crisis of news media viability and ignores many, if not most, of the world’s news media. This chapter explores the complex interaction among variables that threaten global news media viability and outlines a research agenda on key issues across global news ecologies.
