Context

Per Nilsen and Susanne Bernhardsson

Chapter 10 in Handbook on Implementation Science, 2020, pp 259-275 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The importance of the context of implementation is widely recognized in implementation science. It is crucial to account for the influence of context in implementation studies to explain how or why certain results are achieved, as well as to enhance the generalizability of study findings. The relevance of context is reflected in the numerous theories, frameworks, models and taxonomies that are used in implementation science. This chapter is based on a scoping review of 17 determinant frameworks, many of which are widely used in the field. The chapter begins with an investigation into how context is addressed in these frameworks, including what terms are used for contextual determinants. It then examines how the context is conceptualized in the frameworks. Twelve different context dimensions can be identified in the frameworks. The chapter ends with a discussion of the key findings and recommendations for accounting for context in future implementation research.
