Organizational perspectives in implementation science

Emily R. Haines and Sarah A. Birken

Chapter 19 in Handbook on Implementation Science, 2020, pp 442-452 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Relative to other domains of implementation determinants, conceptualization of implementation determinants at the organizational level has been limited. Organizational theories offer the field a host of existing, highly relevant, and heretofore largely untapped explanations of the dynamic interactions between organizations and their environments. In this chapter, the authors demonstrate how organizational theories can be applied to understand the implementation of a programme for preventing child maltreatment. Despite their demonstrated relevance to implementation science, organizational theories remain underutilized in the field. To facilitate their use, the authors developed the Organisation Theory for Implementation Science (OTIS) framework. OTIS synthesizes constructs from organizational theories that are relevant explanations of collective-level determinants and implementation. OTIS use has the potential to advance our understanding of organizational influences on the implementation of evidence-based practices, thus facilitating the identification of theory-driven strategies for implementation and organizational change.
