Strategies

Jennifer Leeman and Per Nilsen

Chapter 9 in Handbook on Implementation Science, 2020, pp 234-258 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: To have an impact on health, evidence-based interventions not only need to be effective, they also need to be implemented into routine practice and sustained over time. For this reason, increasing attention has been given to the study of implementation strategies. This chapter begins with an introduction to implementation strategies, followed by a historical overview of how implementation strategies have been classified, and a brief summary of the evidence base in support of their effectiveness. The chapter then outlines best practices for specifying and reporting implementation strategies, and a system for classifying strategies. This sets the stage for the presentation of a systematic approach to selecting strategies that includes a detailed, step-by-step application of the approach. The chapter ends with a discussion of how a systematic approach to selecting strategies is foundational to evaluating whether, how and when implementation strategies work.
