The use and misuse of online paraphrasing, editing and translation software

Abstract: The existence and proliferation of automated text processing applications such as paraphrasing tools, translation software, proofreading and editing systems are threats to academic integrity. The breadth and depth of the threats are not fully understood. In order to understand the misuse of tools versus appropriate use, research is needed to examine who is using the tools and why they are used. Are text processing applications sought due to difficulties with language, or due to other factors? Can we identify what is being processed and how outputs are used? Are entire tracts being translated, or just occasional phrases and words? Are outputs altered to provide an illusion of originality? Do we know if uploaded text is being processed, captured, stored, re-used or even sold? Understanding the threats posed by online and embedded paraphrasing, editing and translation tools will assist with future approaches to addressing technology generated academic integrity issues.
