Leveraging the teachable moment: what, if anything, can students learn from cheating?

Abstract:
Cheating is a behaviour that occurs in every school, college and university. Yet, we know little about what, if anything, students learn from their cheating experience. So, this chapter proposes a theoretically grounded research agenda for exploring what, if anything, students learn through the process of being reported for cheating and through after-violation education such as a one-on-one mentoring programme or a structured curriculum delivered in a classroom type setting. After a review of existing research in the various areas, possible research questions and methodologies are explored.
