Using distance education to teach health economics: national and global experiences

Abstract:
The chapter focuses on four distance educational modalities: asynchronous platforms, teleconferencing, Skype sessions and email correspondence. We use case study approach to highlight the alternatives in distance education that lend themselves well to teaching economics to college students. Four case studies include: 1. A joint health economics (HE) course with two local colleges 2. Short courses offered via teleconferencing nationwide for a certificate program 3. Lectures via teleconference delivered to a Latin American university and 4. Semester-long courses delivered to a medical school in Vietnam via a combination of face-to-face learning and teleconferencing. These case studies touch upon the logistical, cultural, and evaluative issues observed in distance education experience in all four cases. They examine both issues unique to each modality, and issues common to all modalities used. Each of the four cases discusses a more complex modality, compared to the previous case, which leads to enhanced learning experiences.
