Assessing competency in health economics using portfolios

Abstract: A portfolio is a collection of students’ work, including a reflective commentary, submitted as evidence of learning. There are examples of portfolio-based assessment in economics education, but the method is not widely used in the discipline. In this chapter, we provide suggestions for how portfolios may be used effectively to assess competence in Health Economics. We present a worked example of the portfolio method used to assess a module in Health Economics at University College London. We outline the content list for the module and work required by students for preparation of the portfolio before and after the teaching has taken place. Based on our experience, we provide teaching tips that will aid implementation of the portfolio, along with key take away messages for implementers.
