The role of public employment services in enhancing labour market matching

Sofia Dromundo Mokrani, Anne Lauringson and Theodora Xenogiani

Chapter 23 in Handbook on Labour Markets in Transition, 2024, pp 442-462 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter discusses how public employment services (PES) support the job matching process, by providing specialised services to jobseekers and employers. It highlights that digitalisation in PES can play an important role in promoting better job matches through e.g. profiling tools, tools mapping skills and competencies, as well as matching tools and dedicated platforms. The chapter also highlights the role of PES counsellors in supporting both jobseekers and employers, thereby contributing to better job matches and more inclusive labour market. The chapter discusses the existing evidence on the effectiveness of PES services related to job matching and identifies promising areas for further research.
