Abstract: This chapter provides an overview of the theoretical and empirical literature on the relationship between transportation and urban structure from the perspective of urban economics. There is no unified economic theory of urban structure. The chapter has an intra-regional perspective and focuses on the internal spatial organization of urban and metropolitan areas, emphasizing the interactions between three key factors: location, land use, and transportation. After outlining the main features of the prevailing theories, a summary of recent empirical evidence is provided, with a particular focus on studies of suburbanization and decentralization. The chapter concludes by highlighting some major takeaways for further research.
