Group faultlines in boards of directors: current trends and future directions

Alana Vandebeek

Chapter 12 in Research Handbook on Diversity and Corporate Governance, 2023, pp 147-161 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter aims to provide an overview of the literature on group faultlines in boards of directors. By synthesizing the literature, a number of aspects are highlighted regarding the faultline literature in corporate boards. More specifically, there is a focus on the faultline attributes mostly examined within board research, the most commonly used measures and methods, and the underlying faultline mechanisms and outcomes. Moreover, the effect of specific board contingencies on group faultlines is discussed. The purpose of this chapter is not only to conclude the prior research, but also to provide insights for future research directions and to guide future contributions on group faultlines in boards of directors
