Empowering Techgirls: role modeling and mentoring the next generation in STEM

Tricia Massey, Jenine Beekhuyzen and Sue Nielsen

Chapter 16 in Handbook of Gender and Technology, 2023, pp 296-310 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: At the Tech Girls Movement Foundation, the vision is for a society in which girls confidently lead in STEM entrepreneurship and contribute to their community and the economy. The Techgirls’ programs champion Australian schoolgirls using hands-on learning to transform their future and encourage equity in the technology industry. This chapter offers an overview of the origins of Techgirls and highlights some of the integral work being done to expand girls’ opportunities to engage with STEM. Significantly, the Tech Girls Movement Foundation’s mandate to provide powerful role modeling and mentorship in multifaceted realms is explored and analyzed through a theatrical lens to investigate notions of identity construction. The result is an interdisciplinary discussion that proffers a breach into future equity for women across STEM fields.
