Tourism and social development: the case of Africa

Abstract: Tourism development is an important economic sector especially due to its various positive spill over effects via employment creation, rising standard of living, higher national income, increased foreign exchange earnings and revenue to the government. Given the high influx of tourists in Africa, the central question this paper investigates into is whether or not tourism development contributes to overall economic development in the continent. Hence, the present study uses a dynamic panel ARDL framework and investigates the impact of tourism on both economic growth and human development as a social indicator for Africa from 1995 to 2019. The findings reveal that tourism development has a positive and significant influence on both economic and social development mainly in the long run. In the short run, tourism also contributes to economic development. The results further indicate that investment is an important variable, boosting both economic growth and human development in the sample of African countries under study.
