FELTAG in rearview: FE from the past to the future through plague times

Abstract: This chapter traces a history of the post-compulsory Further Education (FE) sector in the UK in order to provide an illustration of the present. We argue that despite generations of neglect, the sector's staff and institutions were equipped to cope with the varying crises that the COVID-19 pandemic represented. This is due partly to the Further Education Learning Technologies Action Group (FELTAG) initiative - a movement and report that primed the sector for the social and educational changes and challenges that digital technologies bring. The chapter uses accounts from Initial Teacher Education staff at a UK university to highlight their skill, agility and expertise to handle the impact of the disruption from the pandemic. We also argue that FE must emerge from the pandemic with an invigorated pursuit for autonomy and flexibility, as it is clear that its values to communities have renewed purpose in the new normal.
