Making copyright law accessible to all creatives using CopyrightUser.org
Bartolomeo Meletti
Chapter 22 in Teaching Intellectual Property Law, 2023, pp 308-321 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
CopyrightUser.org is an independent online platform intended to make UK copyright law accessible to everyone. It helps creatives and other copyright users - such as teachers and students, cultural heritage practitioners and members of the public, among others - make informed decisions on copyright issues. This chapter briefly describes the features that characterise the initiative and have led to the success of CopyrightUser.org, which now attracts over 240,000 unique visitors every year. It then provides an overview of the main educational resources freely available on the website, showing how they can be used to teach UK copyright law. The Copyright User website offers guidance and educational resources that are responsive to users’ needs, accessible, credible, and focus on positive messaging. They aim to enable lawful copying and promote critical thinking about copyright, creativity and the creative economy.
