Interdisciplinary teaching through a combination of methods: IP licensing for non-law students

Abstract: Teaching IP licensing is a challenging task requiring interdisciplinary knowledge (technological, legal, business) and solid IP background from the teacher. This is necessary for the teacher to be able to provide their students with the skills and knowledge for them to analyse, participate in, negotiate, and conclude IP licensing deals. More than any other field of IP teaching, IP licensing requires an interdisciplinary approach, focused on actively exploring real-world challenges. Such an approach is implemented in the module “Licensing deals”, taught in the “Industrial business” department of the University of National and World Economy to students in the 4th year of the Bachelor’s degree “Business economics” program. The current chapter shows the logic behind the curriculum design of IP licensing for non-law students and a combination of suitable and appropriate instruments to cover the scope of interdisciplinary knowledge and skills students need to acquire, namely collaborative teaching, case study analysis and project-based and peer-assisted learning.
