Multisensory approaches to researching the past: insights from history and archaeology
Hannah Platts
Chapter 12 in Handbook of Historical Methods for Management, 2023, pp 173-187 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter considers multisensory research techniques in history and archaeology, with the aim of highlighting opportunities for business and management history scholars interested in spatial studies from a multisensory perspective. Starting with an exploration into the early pioneers of sensory history and more recent research in this area, this chapter then moves on to consider particular multisensory methodologies and types of historical evidence that can be used to understand ancient organizations. I draw on my own research experience on the organization of the ancient Roman house from a multisensory perspective, to argue that multisensory methods are of value for historians of organization and management studies as these methods can likewise be drawn upon to unpack the sensory impact of spatial organization and management on individual and group dynamics, emotions and experiences within more recent organizations.
