Researching with records in management and organisation studies: archives, data corpus, and reflexivity

Amon Barros

Chapter 6 in Handbook of Historical Methods for Management, 2023, pp 80-93 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Management and organisation studies have a long relationship with history. However, methodological and theoretical debates developed in other fields receive less attention than they should. The same is true for the use of records and archives. This chapter explores what can be considered an archive and some new possibilities for archival research opened by recent technologies. It also suggests a path to deal with data not necessarily organised into an archive, treating them first as a data corpus and then as a dataset that might be turned into quasi-archives. I advocate for a reflexive engagement with records avoiding naïve realism and considering how archives shape questions made to them and the answers they offer. Finally, I suggest that researchers dealing with archives and records would profit from engaging with developments in archival studies.
