Introduction to the Handbook on Governance in International Organizations

Chapter 1 in Handbook on Governance in International Organizations, 2023, pp 1-5 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The Handbook examines four key questions and themes related to governance in - rather than ‘by’ - international organizations (IOs). In deliberately plain terms, the first three of these are: What is it? Who governs and how? Is it done well, or poorly? Authors from a variety of scholarly, professional and personal perspectives identify and evaluate different theoretical approaches and historical understandings, and provide carefully informed analyses of contemporary issues of governance in IOs, including topics of human rights and development, gender, individual and institutional accountability, organizational culture and institutional leadership, civil society participation, digital transformation and the use of social media, human resources management, and the changing roles and influence of member states both large and small. Fourth and finally, the concluding chapters ask: Have international organizations had their day - are they receding, fragmenting, and failing, or are they capable of reform and adaptation in meeting ‘wicked problems’?
