Societal impact evaluation in SSH in the Czech Republic: in defence against the strong STEM application discourse

Abstract:
In the last 15 years, research evaluation in the Czech Republic has undergone major changes. In this chapter, we analyse the policies that relate to the evaluation of societal impact as a type of learning process that evolved around the existing information infrastructure of research. We frame these policy initiatives by looking specifically at the public debate about societal impact of social sciences and humanities. In the country with a strong industry sector, rooted in state socialist legacy of heavy industry and history of manufacturing, both public debate and policy initiatives substantially reflect the societal impact of science in general. On the one side, SSH researchers try to adjust the policy framework intended to support technological innovation and commercialisation through the learning processes, gaining more space for SSH. On the other, SSH public intellectuals struggle with strong opinion makers from the industry and commerce sector who prioritise STEM in both research funding and evaluation.
