The case for change: rethinking research in economics education

Chapter 1 in Rethinking Economics Education, 2025, pp 1-5 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter highlights the gaps in research on economics education, particularly the lack of understanding of why outcomes differ across demographics and institutions. While much is known about trends in course enrollments and pedagogies, there is insufficient causal evidence explaining why practices yield varied outcomes. The chapter introduces a unifying framework using relevance, belonging, and growth mindset to guide research and promote a holistic understanding of economics education. Backwards design, a method emphasizing clear objectives and aligned assessments, is proposed to enhance research validity. This chapter lays the groundwork for rethinking economics education to identify effective interventions and address disparities in student persistence, performance, and engagement.
