Relevance, belonging, and growth mindset framework: a foundation for economics education research

Sam Allgood () and KimMarie McGoldrick ()

Chapter 2 in Rethinking Economics Education, 2025, pp 6-22 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores relevance, belonging, and growth mindset (RBG) as a unifying framework for economics education research. RBG are concepts from educational psychology and provide a way for explaining why decisions about course design, such as pedagogy, assessment, and course content generate different student outcomes. The chapter explains how commonly employed teaching methods, such as flipped classrooms and adaptive learning, may generate better student outcomes because they are able to enhance relevance, foster belonging, and encourage a growth mindset. RBG provide a mechanism to explain differences in outcomes and offer pathways for improving inclusivity. The chapter discusses how interventions targeting RBG could address disparities in retention and performance, especially for women and underrepresented minorities, while emphasizing the need for empirical evidence to support these claims.
