Chapter 12 in Handbook of Virtual Work, 2023, pp 216-234 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic dramatically accelerated ongoing trends in virtual work as a massive shift from face-to-face to remote work was necessitated to combat the spread of the virus. When combined with ongoing societal forces such as globalization, rapid technological advancements, work-life boundary challenges, economic disparities, the “Gig Economy” and emergence of freelance virtual contributors, and generational and cultural diversity, unprecedented leadership challenges have emerged. We chronicle the nature of these challenges and explore the implications of alternatives to hierarchical leadership within virtual work contexts, including shared leadership, functional and visionary leadership, structural substitutes for leadership, complexity leadership, paradoxical virtual leadership, and authentic leadership. We conclude with practical recommendations for formal and informal leadership operating in virtual work settings.
