Abstract:
New information technologies (IT) like Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and Blockchain can enable highly adaptive organizing arrangements that have significant potential for value creation under changing business environments. Orchestration refers to a loosely coupled archetype of managing inter-firm process linkages, such that a focal firm is flexibly positioned in relation to current and potential partners. The firm’s performance is driven by its ability to coordinate value creation processes and create new knowledge in conjunction with ever-changing partners that possess specialized competencies. We draw upon coordination and sense-making theories to identify and articulate two pathways to enable orchestration by: (1) Interface Structuring – managing the inter-dependencies related to inter-organizational processes and information exchange; and (2) Interface Minding - augmenting and supporting socio-cognitive processes directed towards partnering with other firms.
