Refocusing human-AI interaction through a teamwork lens

Christopher Flathmann, Beau G. Schelble and Nathan J. McNeese

Chapter 6 in Handbook of Virtual Work, 2023, pp 109-127 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to advance, its utility to humans has increased substantially, resulting in human-AI interaction becoming a common occurrence. The domains and applications of human-AI interaction have rapidly expanded in both real-world and research contexts to meet the needs and demands of modern teams. Unfortunately, this rapid expansion has led to the goals and requirements of the human-AI interaction domain becoming less focused. Thus, there is a need to refocus the domain and provide a means of consolidation for different disciplines under the umbrella of human-AI interaction. This work proposes that the use of a teamwork perspective provides the most robust lens through which human-AI interaction can be refocused. Decades of teaming literature, teaming’s interdisciplinary nature, and teaming’s reliance on modern technology make the concept uniquely equipped to create meaningful, long-term interactions between humans and AI.
