Plenty more fish in the sea? Seeking sustainable solutions to improve responsible seafood consumption

Abstract: This chapter explores the challenges of sustainable seafood and examines how consumers can be supported to make more sustainable choices for both their health and wellbeing and for the planet and workers involved in seafood supply. The chapter sets out how critical challenges remain for ensuring sustainable and ethical seafood, free from the pressures of politics, economic growth and competing sustainability messages. Taking account of the many threats facing our planet, the chapter describes how supply chain resiliency arising from a match between environmental capacities and social values will be key for the sustainability of our global food systems that face potentially catastrophic climate change and complex global challenges. The chapter concludes by examining the role of the consumer in improving sustainable seafood supply chains, and recommendations for future research.
