The move away from matter in art and design
Simon Clatworthy
Chapter 1 in The Materials of Service Design, 2023, pp 3-6 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter of the book explores the relationship between materials and service design, expanding the definition of material to include those without physical form. It highlights the evolution of materiality in art and design. It argues for the importance of understanding materials in service design and the need for cross-functional collaboration in material representation. The chapter concludes with a discussion on the use of bodies as a material of service design. Three central concepts of the chapter are: (1) the expanded definition of material in service design, (2) the evolution of materiality in art and design, and (3) pointing a chapter that develops the use of bodies as a material of service design.
