Chapter 11 in The Materials of Service Design, 2023, pp 125-130 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter examines collaborations in service delivery, where two or more parties engage with each other to make and decide on something. Collaborations are becoming more prevalent in services, with concepts like prosumption and co-production describing services where users and professionals work together to shape and deliver solutions. Collaborations can vary in terms of who is involved, how decisions are made, and if there is consensus among those involved. The chapter argues that collaborations are not just social, but also socio-material, with material aspects playing a crucial role in shaping interactions. Material elements can support or disrupt collaborations and in some cases, allow for collaborations without consensus among parties. The chapter uses the example of diabetes treatment to illustrate how changes in the way diabetes is treated have opened up opportunities for reconsidering social norms and values about the condition and the relationships among those involved.
