Clay: a tangible catalyst

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the use of tangible catalysts, a wide range of materials that can be used to embody experiences through an aesthetic process, in the service design field. The author highlights the properties of these materials and the different approaches and skills required to shape them. The use of tangible catalysts is a way to communicate experiences that are difficult to put into words. The author uses clay as an example of a tangible catalyst in her practice, where she explores embodied experiences of being in relation with the public sector, its services and policies. She also highlights that using clay as a material can aid in thinking and thinking with others and allows for embodied reflection in the service design process. The material can be used early in the process for reflection, in the middle for communication, and at the end as a reminder or trigger for continued dialogue.
