The core of design is in the making

Chapter 2 in The Materials of Service Design, 2023, pp 7-18 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The chapter discusses the heritage of design in working with materials and how it influences service design. It highlights the values of a design-school approach, focusing on the integration of function, aesthetics, and structure, traced back to Vitruvius. The author argues that the core competencies of design lie in the making approach, which involves synthesis and balancing of multiple elements to form a solution, and describes how designers approach projects through wicked problems and abductive thinking. Materials of service design are compared to the context of interaction design and explores aspects of design for interaction with immaterials. Material affordance, temporal behavior as a material, and conceptual, experiential materials are highlighted. The idea of forming for future situations and the role of representation and mediation as a means of exploring immaterials is discussed. The importance of considering the ethos when discussing materials of service design and its impact on teaching, practice, and research, is also introduced.
