Representations in service design

Johan Blomkvist

Chapter 3 in The Materials of Service Design, 2023, pp 19-26 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores the different ways in which materials can be visualized or prototyped during service design. The importance of shared understanding in co-design process, and the central role of representations, both individual and collective, in achieving this is highlighted. It also mentions that representations of current situations can be examined and verified by returning to the actual, real world situation, while representations of the future depend less on observational skills than on the ability to imagine. It presents a taxonomy of representation, showing how a current or future situation can be represented by different modes, either by actual service, individual internal representation, shared external representation or overlapping internal representation. The author points to how designers fluidly move between representations to understand and improve existing situations. The need for designers to develop skills in working with different forms of representation, with different degrees of fidelity and abstraction, and to be aware of the context in which they are using them, is discussed.
