What do my customers really want? Pivoting digital technology and business models in emergency response management

Cesar Bandera and Katia Passerini

Chapter 1 in Cases on Digital Entrepreneurship, 2023, pp 1-10 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Because digital products and services are inherently virtual, entrepreneurs can often deploy them more quickly than products and services that require physical assets. However, an accelerated deployment is no substitute for a strategic one. We present a case study based on a true story in which a digital entrepreneur seems to be on the right track; the company has a technology that works, a potential early adopter, and a pilot that meets all expectations. But in his haste, the digital entrepreneur fails to take note of emerging industry trends and the nature of the company’s good relationship with its client, with unexpected consequences. This case study demonstrates that the very attributes of digital entrepreneurship - in particular accelerated development, deployment, and client engagement - can make business model validation more difficult
