Access to technology for students with disabilities in higher education

Chapter 23 in Handbook of Higher Education and Disability, 2023, pp 311-322 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Some people with disabilities face challenges in pursuing higher education because digital learning opportunities and services are not accessible to them. To solve this problem institutions need to ensure that students have access to assistive technologies (ATs) and that the mainstream technologies they procure, develop, and use are accessibly designed. In this chapter I present a framework that can be used for doing so, an example of its application to online and hybrid learning opportunities, and potential roles that key stakeholders can play to make the technologies and applications they support more accessible and inclusive.
