Abstention

François Facchini and Louis Jaeck

Chapter 1 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Public Choice, 2025, pp 1-8 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Applying the rational choice model to electoral behaviours helps provide a deeper understanding of the reasons why people vote or abstain from voting. The goal of this chapter is to present the literature on electoral abstention within the framework of Riker and Ordeshook's equation and show its scientific fecundity.
