Kai A. Konrad

Chapter 100 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Public Choice, 2025, pp 715-721 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter describes important milestones in the intellectual history of the theory of rent seeking, presents examples, provides a brief insight into the formal capture of the phenomenon in contest theory, and discusses specific aspects. These include dynamic considerations, the collective good problem, and the possibilities and limitations of designing such processes. It highlights the interplay between rent-seeking opportunities and the institutional context in which it takes place.
