Secession as a public choice

Martin Rode

Chapter 102 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Public Choice, 2025, pp 729-737 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Recent years show a renewed interest in public choice and political economy in the topic of secession. This chapter attempts to give a broad overview of the relevant theoretical and empirical studies in the field. First, the literature explaining long-run trends in state size is summarized. Second, studies are reviewed that identify the conditions under which secession becomes a viable option. Third, evidence concerning the possibility of accommodation is summarized. Fourth, the economic and societal outcomes of secession and secessionist mobilization are discussed. The chapter concludes by identifying a number of open questions for future research.
