Candidates’ positions in deterministic multidimensional models

Chapter 14 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Public Choice, 2025, pp 99-106 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Deterministic multidimensional party positioning models examine under which conditions parties locate at the median or mean of the electoral distribution. These models assume that candidates have full and complete information on voters’ preferences and that voters’ preferences only depend on policies. The results show that a multidimensional equilibrium may not always exist and that when it exists, convergence to the mean or median of the electoral distribution depends on conditions imposed on voters’ preferences and/or on the distribution of voters’ ideal points. Equilibrium non-existence, chaos or instability, occurs because social preferences are intransitive, even when voters have transitive preferences.
