Candidates’ positions in multidimensional valence models

Maria Gallego

Chapter 16 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Public Choice, 2025, pp 115-122 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Complete and incomplete information multidimensional policy party positioning models are surveyed where voters’ preferences depend on candidates’ policies and on non-policy evaluation of candidates, called valences. A full information equilibrium always exists where the valence advantaged candidate adopts moderate policies. In incomplete information unidimensional valence models, when an equilibrium exists, candidates locate at the mean of voters’ ideal policies. In incomplete information multidimensional valence models, an equilibrium may exist where candidates adopt divergent policies. When activists make campaign contributions to influence choices through an activist valence, candidates’ positions balance the electoral and activist pulls in equilibrium when it exists.
